Sweden convicts PKK, deportation ahead of key NATO-Turkey talks

Stockholm sentenced a man to four years in prison and deportation for attempting to raise money for the terrorist PKK, a decision that comes right before a Swedish-Turkish meeting on Sweden’s NATO candidacy.

According to the facts, a Kurdish man extorted a businessman in Stockholm at gunpoint to pay money to PKK, an organisation Turkey and the EU label a terrorist organisation.

“The investigation shows, that the PKK conducts extensive fundraising activities in Europe using, among other things, extortion of Kurdish traders” the court’s counsellor Wigen told.

As for the man’s sentencing, the Court decided he would be deported to Turkey after his four years sentence.

Wigen emphasised that the court was not influenced by Sweden’s ongoing NATO accession bid, while Turkey and Hungary are blocking Sweden’s NATO membership aspirations.

The timing of the decision is viewed by observers as being beneficial to Sweden after the Quran burning earlier and considerable backlash from the Islamic world, including Turkey.

Swedish Foreign Minister Billström, said the sentencing “is important, because it shows that we take the security of those who have concerns with the PKK activities seriously.”

Nato Secretary Stoltenberg said : “I understand what President Erdogan is asking for.”

A diplomatic source told EURACTIV : “Let’s just say that this verdict comes at a good time for the Swedish government, But despite Sweden’s repeated appeals to Ankara, it is unlikely to make a difference given the current tensions.”

Turkey and Hungary have delayed Sweden’s membership. Stoltenberg said Sweden has done everything to satisfy Turkey’s demands. Sweden has changed its constitution, modified anti-terror laws and lifted an arms embargo on Turkey, among other concessions.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said after a meeting at NATO headquarters that “The legislative changes need to be reflected in practice”

Ankara says it will not change its position.

“The Quran-burning incident that took place the day of Eid al-Adha is an indication of how justified we were with our reservations about Sweden” Turkish defense ministry spokesman, Zeki Akturk said.

Hungary is also holding up approval of Sweden’s candidacy.

Swedish Prime Minister, Kristersson, said he had spoken twice to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and “both times he has confirmed that Hungary will not delay.”
