J'ai appris quelque chose d'important, merci khey

With the monarchy out of the picture, the socialists began to try to morph the country into an image completly counter what the spanish people themselves actually wanted. Its attempt to seize by force the power it was unable to conquer by democratic 8 out of the 11 original republican caucus were freemasons. For some strange reason pretty much the first degree of the republic was one which cancelled the 15th century degree of Isabella expelling the jews. This decree wasn't even enforced so it was no more than a symbolic act. Fingers were quickly points at jewish elements from international communism. The actions of the socialist governement had some aspects of persecutions of christianity toward churches notably.
The nation of Spain was broken. Despite being a catholic nation, church burning and murder of clergy were comon place. And essentially actively encouraged by the government. The Vatican and the churches leaders had offered a generous compromise. An American style of separation of state and church. Yet it wasn't enough for the leftists and it was rejected. By the time war was about to break out, religious services in parts of the country were simply suppressed. The Jesuits had been expelled in a bid to make education a state monopoly and in the same vein, almost all the catholic schools in the nation had been closed. Many of these schools were simply taken over by force or burnt down. When we think of a revolution we think perhaps France or Russia in which there is either extreme violence or civil war. Yet in reality revolutions often build up slowly. In Spain's case, it was visible for the las years before it broke out. Everytime a rebellion broke out, 5% of the landed property of the country had been confiscated. Most of them by the most extreme element of popular front government. The government simply did nothing and then recognized the new order. X post FAO. In simpler terms, communism had taken parts of Spain. The lands were redistributed. Those who hadn't their lands seized had problems of their own. By July, rural labor cost were up to 50% to 60% from the ridiculous laws the previous government had passed. Most of landowners simply couldn't afford their way of life anymore. Many began to abandon their groud to properties on the ground that labor cost exceeded value. It was as if children had taken over government. The farmers couldn't farm anymore. The nation was essentially lawless at this point but it varied from province to province.
In fact the first action of the parliament was the dismiss Alcala Zamara as president of the Republic because he protested against the governement'ds decrees which required blanquet reinstatement and compensassions for the workers involved in the 1934 communist revolution.
A catholic crusade.
In the Russian civil war, the orthodox church was seen as one of the prime enemies of the communists. In the Finnish Civil War, the white militia were mostly Lutherian farmers. This meant a great deal given that their opponents were atheistics communists. In Spain, the issue was even more pronounced and in a way ended up being a war in which one of the primary aspects being fought for if not the primary one was catholicism itself. A great deal of propaganda has gone into justifying the intense anti clerical violence of the Republic. The most comon justification is that the church held tyrannical public power. But this is just patently untrue as church and state had been separated for 5 years by 1936 and the Catholic Church had lost almost all of its economic ressources and was in dire straits. The reality is that catholicism was the spiritual head of the traditionnal order and for that reason, revolution aries wanted to crush the church in Spain, route and branch. It was an unprovoked and violent attack on a practically defensless target. Yet it was seen as necessary to crush the old order. The attacks on the church in 1936 were nothing new. In 1900, 1931 and in spring 1936 before the the actual rising itself, churches had been burned on a gigantic scale. The data for attacks on church properties goes as follow : 101 attacks in 1931, 15 in 1932, 70 in 1933, 25 in 1934, 2 in 1935 and 208 in the first 6 months of 1936. In 1934, this has been ramped up at a level as priests and teenage seminary students in Austerius were targeted and executed in the revolutionnary uprising here. In 1936, things reached an entirely new level. If the clergy were an ethnic group, then it would have been deemed a genocide. A vast amount of revolutionnaries in the Republican Zone literally wanted to kill every single one of them.
Despite all the rhetoric about extermination, the only social sector marked out for extermination as such by either side was the clergy, by some of the revolutionnaries in the Republican Zone. " Toshow the sheer size of this mass murder, you just need to look at the Jacoban phase of the french Revolution in which 2 000 clergymens were slain. In Spain, over 3 times this number were killed. The number of the clergumen in both countries were roughly the same. At this time in 1936, throught, the church in France was far more powerful than the church in Spain. The final tally is as it folllows. Secular priests : 4 022, regular clergy : 2 376. Nuns : 292. Seminarians : 95. Bishops : 12. Apostolic administrators : 1 This gives us a total of 6 788 total members of the clergy killed. Percentage wise this is nearly 10% of the total clergy. In terms of male clergy, the total is over 20%. This figure is also only taking in accout Spain as a whole figure. If we were to focus only in the Republican Zone, then it's a greater figure than that. It's also worth noting that the Catholic Clergy were exclusively targeted, not protestants. Most protestant churches in the Republican Zone remained open. Persecution of protestants was more a feature of the nationalist zone where they were increasing restrictions and where a small number of protestantministers were executed. Among the catholic clergy persecuted, some were hanged, drowned, burned to death or buried alive. On many occasions, victims were tortured at times in shockingly sophisticated ways. Mockery, insults, blasphemy and coercion to blasphemy were very comon parts of the torture which could also include force the victimes to strip naked, beating, cutting, skinning and mutilation.
In the case of mutilation, there was a morbid fixation on genitalia, all these rights of violence performed on the Clergy. further contributed to deshumanizing people, whose humanity had long ago been denied by anti clerical discourse and at the same time facilitating the conditions for guilt free massacre. The combinasion of cultural and sexual references ritualized violence and humiliation of the victim who was no longer a human being but an animal, reached its most exact expressions in instances of priests being treated like pigs at the slaughter house or bulls in the bull ring. Finally, irrespective of the death they suffered. The corpses of the clercs were likely to be dragged on the street, exposed to public places or desecrated in many others way. " With the devout Catholic Franco at the helm, things could be changed. As noted there was a religious revival of massive proportions all across the country. Thousands of CAtholics who had fallen away from their faith, suddently refounded again in the face of the attempt to exterminate the clergy. The people almost immediatly saw the dividing line between the 2 sides as religious, just as much as it was political. In mid september 1936, Bishop Marcelino officially called the conflict a crusade in public, a term which reverberated aroud catholic world. This language enver became official in the church. However It did become official with the Franco's regime. On 1st July 1937, all but 5 members of the church hierarchy whom hadn't been murdered formely endorsed Franco's cause in a public collective letter. Inside they declared that Franco was waging a war as definned in catholic traditionnal principles.
In September 1937, the Vatican appointed a representative to the Franco regime. It was not an official one but next year an official ambassador was appointed. Religion was probably the most important single factor in the morale and cohesion of Franco's forces. The only parts of Spain where there was significants division of opinion among catholics was the Basque country and Catalonia. Here half of the catholic sentiment supported the Republic. After a letter guaranteed Basque's autonomy, a minority of Calatan catholics took the same attitude. " While the Republicans grew to dominate the propaganda aspect of the war, Franco certainly helped himself with the Catholic crusade language he used. In America, where the propaganda machine was pretty effective, Catholic sentiment was split. In Catholic nations of Europe however, they worked wonders. Catholic Ireland was in fact the only western democracy to support Franco's cause. And a volunteer legion even came to join what they deemed themselves a Catholic crusade. On the other hand, the atrocities against Catholics caused a negative affect for the Republicans. Their anti clericalism appeared to be as much of a religion as the other side's Catholicism. Albeit of course a false one. This was a negative worldview however and they could never hope to garner anywhere near as much support as Franco did from the religious issue. The relgious persecution became a boomerang strenghtening their enemies more than their own cause. By the time the end of the war came around, the church was restored to an even greater position than it held under the rule of Alfonso VII before he fled the country.
The blood of all those who lost their lives for the cause of catholicism became a basis for a new catholic revival which continued in its intensity all the way into the 1950s. In 1987, the Vatican officially beatified 489 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, the largest single beatification in Catholic history. It was the most successfull revival of traditionnal christianity all over the western world.
Franco's nationalists.
During the Russian Civil War, the reds were united around Vladimir Lenin. In the other hand, the white russians were being crippled by disunity. This time around in Spain, the left were the ones being crippled with disunity. They couldn't even agree on ideology not even talking about a leader. The rebels however were completly unified beneath Francisco Franco. Foreign visitors would often express their surprise after having met Franco for the first time. For all the big talk about El Cordo, he was actually a short, stocky, balding and overweight man. Hardly a Mussolini type figure with his square jaw and serious countenance. In the other hand side of things he was hardly a Hitler either. The Fuhrer won the hearts of Germans not with his appearence but with his otherwordly rethorical ability. Franco was nothing of sort. Spain's new dictator had a squeaky voice and despite being polite and pumper, he also came across as timid in his first conversations with visitors. Franco's appeal was something else entirely. For years, Spaniards catholics had been downtrodden and abused by their government as they tried to impose a far left regime on the nation. For years there was no one to speak out for them. Seemingly, no one in the world cared. The nation was drifting toward Civil War for a long time. Yet there appeared to be no figurehead who could light the spark and lead the nation back to his former glory. Jose Antonio of the Falangists was one of the most charismatics men in the naiton, yet his fnage didn't seemingly appeal to the Spaniards. They couldn't bring in 1% of the votes. It wouldn't be until the violence itself broke out that the Spaniards would find their heroe.
After the first couple of months it would be clear that Franco would lead the way. It was his armies whom were the elite forces pushing toward Madrid. And it was his emissaries which secured Spain the vital support from Italy and Germany she so desperatly needed. Franco had personally turned a ragtag rebellion which began on the opposite sides of the country into a successfull counter revolution. Franco's leadership was accepted by the Spanish population as a fact. Despite not being a stereotypical leader, he was exactly what the Spaniards wanted. He was a man of the people who was always been a devout catholic. This simple fact as well as his genius mind for military tactics was ll that was needed. He had become their savior. There was very little squabbling between ideologies like in the Republican Zone. The communists subordination to Franco's regime whilst maintaining their unique identity at the same time as they always had the monarchists very few in number and deemed, Franco was their best chance. from the get go. The Catholics who had voted for Seda were desilusionned with that party and fromtheir failure to take advantage from the multiple opportunities with the legal route. Their youth wing had began to turn to the Falange in the hunt for a more extreme solution to their problems.
Soviet policy in Spain.
Ironically, the Soviet Union, master of revolutions, didn't want a civil war in Spain in this case. The situation in Spain as mentionned earlier was perfect as It was. And launch a revolution would have an absolute propaganda nightmare. At a time where French and British support were necessary. Also there was the frustrating fact that Spain's left was mostly socialist or anarchist, not communist. Even the communists weren't the right kind of communists for Stalin in a lot of cases. They were closer to the Trotskyists. When the Civil War began however, it was thrown aside and support was given. When the initial wartime Prime Minister, Geral, asked the Soviets on the 25th of July to send arms to the Embassy of Paris, For them the first response was a massive fundraising drive within the Soviet Union itself in which the equivalent of 1,4 millions was raised by the end of the war. Then there began the propaganda war. Most importantly for the Republicans was the formation of the international brigades on the model of the 100 000 foreign internationalist volunteers who arrived to fight in Russia in their revolution. The Brigade Idea was officially adopted in September 1936. By november 1936, there were mens in front fighting in the Battle of Madrid where they were led by mostly Red Army's commanders or Soviet military intelligence officers. Around 41 000 of these volunteers arrived. 3 000 arrived from the United States. And small numbers from various parts of the world. A hugely disproportionate amount of volunteers were jewish, especially those from the United States.
The result was a mess, as the left of the world was all mixed together with predictable results. 500 or more volunteers were executed by thier own side. Thousands of them were arrested or purged for political or disciplinary reasons. By mid 1937, the brigades were in terminal decline. By the summer of next year, it was decided that it would be better to simply get rid of them. It would pressure the Spanish to send their Italians and Germans home too. In October 1938, most of the volunteers were paraded to public applause in Barcelona before they left Spain. In term of combat abilities, these brigades were woeful. The extremly pro republican author Anthony Beevor wrote : " Marty told the volunteers that when the first international brigade goes into action, they will be properly trained men with good rifles. A well equiped core. This was all part of the party's myth of the professional. When in fact, sheer courage, bolted by the belief that the world depended on them, had to make up for appallings deficiencies in the brigadiers basic training. Mens that were sent in Africa, had to project an aura of experts to impress the militias. But they could do little except form ranks. Many never handed a rifle before they were on the way to the front. And the few veterans from WW1 had to show them how to load their obsolete weapons of varied calibers from a box of assaulted ammunition, inexperienced soldiers had to find the right bullets to fit their rifles. The number of jammed weapons throught wedges and separated casings was predictably high. "
As well as the international brigades, Stalin sent over a number of Soviet airmen with far more advanced aircraft than the Spaniards already had at their disposal. The Spaniards only purchased aircrafts and didn't make their own. So this was a really helpful addition to the Republicans in the early stages of the war where they dominated the skies before more support could be sent. However, Stalin had some reservations. The first was the Republican will to resist. And the second was the financial cost. In September 1936, a new government was formed. The latter was solded when the Republican authorities just offered up their entire gold reserves, the fourth biggest in the world on a platter to the Soviets in exchange for support. By mid October, weapons were flooding in for the Republicans at a far higher rate than the nationalists were receiving from the Germans or the Italians. The new soviet tanks were superior to anything the nationalists had too. And it prooved to be quite a headache for Franco. " Althought the Soviet regime adopted a four track approach to the Spanish War. 1 : Major direct military participation in the form of red army weapons and personnal. 2 : 2 major internal political participatin throught the comon turn and the PCE. 3 : Major collateral political propaganda and material assistance throught the worldwide activities of the comon turn. Its parties and innumerable front organization as well as throught the provision of food.and others non military supplies from the Soviet Union. Collateral assistance from a variety of international dommy companies. 4 : Active diplomatic support for the Republic, particulary in the non intervention commitee. As well as throught bilateral diplomacy with the western powers. "
By the end of October, about 530 millions worth of Spanish gold had made his way to Moscow. The point was to use it for arms and others supplies for the next 18 months for the Spanish. But there was no independant auditing and the rate of exchange exmployed by the Soviets was favourable to themselves. So they could essentially milk the Republicans for all they had at a highly inflated cost. The most invaluable gain the Soviets gained from the war however was the change in worldwide opinion. The Soviet Union was viewed by all except most of the left as hell on earth, a state that had committed unspeakable horrors. Churchill has spent years and years rallying against them. Now however there was an absolute propaganda miracle throughout the Civil War that painted the Soviets as the good guys fighting against fascism whatever that meant. This anti fascist crusade in Spain drew attention from the Great Terror currently underway in Moscow. And instead, a facade was put up in its place which most liberals across the western world gobbled up. Except of the years of the Molotov Ribbentrop pact, the Soviet Union used the banner of anti fascism. to full effect, right until the collapse of their empire. In term of actual boots on the ground, combat troops in Spain thought the Soviets never had more than 3 000 mens, this was nothing in comparision to the Italians 70 000 or even the Germans 16 000. The Soviet role was more behind the scene. Unlike the Italian volunteers not a single one of these 3 000 Soviet volunteers were regular infantry soldiers.
Looking at wikipedia, i'ts suggested that Hitler wanted to create a sort of gigantic Germany extending from west Germany to European parts of Russia. Even since WW1, Germany made massive gains in eastern Europe. Most of it were semi independent states. What did Hitler think of slavs in general? Paris conferences in 1919 is the most obvious place to find these ideas. At the time the borders of eastern europe were fluid. Austria Hungrary and Russia had collapse. Germany had surrended and were still waiting for the peace deal to decide how much territory they would loose. Nations declared independance for the first time or for the first time in century. Ideas were floated about regarding handing over peoples who were less civilized to others countries in order to help development. The Lithuanian people given to Poland was one rejected example. And the Slovakians being incorporated into Czechoslovakia was an accepted one and this was just between diferent eastern europeans peoples. The west looked down their nose at those in the East as centuries behind them in development, essentially backwards in term of soviety, culture and technology. All of these people have been suggested to rule by Western powers for centuries. At least heavily they were influenced by western nations. In the Russia's case, the aristocracy was markedly Germanic. One Russian write described the Baltic German Elite, especially as the Russian's Empire cultural and diplomatic envoys. As a result, those discussing the future of foreign lands in Versailles were sceptikal with trusting these people with their own full independance Tasker Bliss, the American military advisor said : " The submerged nations are coming to the surface. And as soon as they appear they fly at somebody's throat. They are like mosquitoes, vicious fromm the moment of their birth.
Hitler in most western viewers in general very much shared the same view of the statesman in Paris. During his youth he was horrified by the mix of cultures in Austria Hungrary especially in Vienna. He felt that it was possible for western nations to rule others. For example of of the things Hitler praised was the British Empire for their ability to rule over foreign people so effectively and their attempts to civilize them. But they are trying to integrate these peoples into the ruling process, skipping over the centuries of civilisationnal development necessary to do so was impossible. When he saw an entire collection of languages being spoken during Austrian Hungrarian government sessions, he predicted the collapse wasn't far off. Today, a lot of people believe that anyone can do anything they want. If they put their mind into it or if they receive the right training. Many believe that you could take someone from the tribesman from North Sentinel Island and that with the right training and support turn him into a doctor or enginner. Back then however this view would have been ridiculous. Hitler didn't have slavs or eastern europeans in general. But it's true that he saw them as inferiors in general. The claim is that he just never saw these people as inferior. However the claim that he wanted to kill them all is hard to know. Hitler's role in the party had been one of the restraining force rather than a mastermind of evil scheme or radical new ideas.
First iit was the SA then later the SS with the more crazy ideas or theories. Hitler stamped out paganism in Germany and refused to bomb England at bearing insistence for months. Later, to the anoints of those around him, he would refuse to use his chemical weapon reserves even when it was clearly lost. The same is true about what to do in the east either during the war or after the war. The theories were floated around ranging from the barbaric to the benevolent and Hitler mulled on the question for years. But the theories were not his own. All fairies of what the Germans were planning to do on eastern europe rest on no evidence. On Hitler's part for example, charts like some we see on wikipedia have no foudation in reality. The idea that the Germans after the war being won would deport or kill 50% of the Latvians, Estonians population for example when they had over a hundred thousand of them fighting for the SS sounds unreal. Erhard Betzel is someone who worked for Rosenberg. The letter is dated April 27th 1942 and it's essentially his thought on how dominate and colonize the East. It's a long quote and important. : " There are many ways that lead to the destruction of the biological strenght of a people. Poor economic conditions, often cause serious declines in birth rate. Let us recall the birth rates in the Reich before 1933. Sometimes however, very great prosperity seems to lead the same result. For example Sweden, the USA. In the primitive populations of Soviet Union, the years of hardship under the Bolshevik regime obviously did not bring a reduction in the birth rate.
At most, industrialization in the last years and the associated urbanization led to some reductions. Neverless Russian birth rate were still far higher than German ones. The goal of a German population policy in the Russian area will have to bring the birth rate to a level below the German birth rate. Incidentally, the same should also apply to the extremely high birth rate Caucasus region. And to some extent also to the Ukraine. First of all there is an interest in increasing the number of Ukrainians as a counterweight against the Russians. However this must not lead to the Ukrainians later taking the places of the Russians. In order to not come to an increase of population in the eastern territories which is unbearable for us, it's urgently necessary to refrain from all the means in the east. which we have used in the right to increase the birth rates. We must pursue a deliberately negative population policy in the areas concerned throught propaganda mesures especially throught the pres, radio, handbillls, cinema, short brochures, educationnal lectures. The population must be persuaded over and over again how harmful it is to have many childrens. It must be pointed out once to the costs which make children than what one could have been acquirred for it the great dangers to women's health that can result from having childrens can be pointed out. And so along with the propaganda a generous propaganda for contraceptives must go into the country. An industry for such mean must be created Neither the promotion or distribution of contraceptives, no abortion should be punishable. The establishment of aborption institutes should be encouraged. For example midwifes and nurses can be trained as abortionists.
The more aborptions will be performed the more the population will gain confidence in them. The physician must be too authorized to perform this act without any question here of a violation of the Medical Code of ethics. Voluntary sterilization is also to be propagated infant mortality must not be combated. Education of the mother about infant and childhood diseases must also not take places. Attempts must be made to minimize the training of the Russian physicians. In these areas, children's homes and the like result must not be supported. In addition to these negative measures in the field of health, divorces should not be made particulary difficult. No special measure should be taken for illegitimate children. Tax break large families, child allowance and all measures that favor large families must be avoided. If the new agricultural stipulate that the number of families may be taken account into the division of land where business reasons aquire it, it's justifier at the present time when it's important to make agriculture in the east as intensive as possible.
