Zhu Yu, Eating People. 2000

Perhaps the most controversial and well known of all transgressive Chinese ‘Shock Art’ is Zhu Yu’s “Eating People”. In this 2000 performance, Zhu Yu allegedly cooks the fetus of a stillborn baby and calmly eats it. He later admits that he vomited several times during the performance as the fetus, (allegedly stolen from a medical testing facility) did not taste good. Many different interpretations of his art have surfaced, including it being commentary on the China’s one-child policy, a show of Yu’s hatred of human hypocrisy, that Yu views humans bodies as nothing more than meat, and examination of his religious beliefs. Yu is protestant. Zhu Yu himself has never explained the performance as he does not think it is necessary, and it is an artists place to do so. Zhu Yu wants to provoke outrage and dialogue, and would be disturbed if, in fact, Eating People did not do so.
