While a fever, persistent cough and loss of taste or smell were the most common symptoms of the ‘original’ coronavirus, a headache, followed by a sore throat, runny nose and fever are the most common for the Delta strain.

A UK study into the rapidly spreading strain found the most commonly reported symptoms had changed since the initial outbreak, with Delta often feeling like “a bad cold” for younger people.

The Zoe Covid Symptom Study, which is based on the self-reporting of virus patients, found that unlike the original variant, loss of smell and shortness of breath ranked lower for those with the Delta strain.

The change in symptoms appears to be linked to the surge in Delta infections, with the strain accounting for 90 per cent of new cases in the UK.

Professor Tim Spector, who runs the study, said the change in symptoms could lead to people mistaking the virus for the common cold.

“Since the start of May, we have been looking at the top symptoms in the app users – and they are not the same as they were,” he said.

“[The Delta] variant seems to be working slightly differently.
